THE SULLIVAN HOUSE: HERSHEY'S MILL HISTORY
Hershey’s Mill was once part of a more than 2,000-acre farm owned by John J. Sullivan, a prominent Philadelphia lawyer. Before Mr. Sullivan’s purchase, the property had passed through the hands of several owners. Those owners included Rachel Hershey, the namesake of "Hershey's Mill," and Wylie Vilas, who sold the property to Sullivan.

Although Sullivan resided in his family home in Rittenhouse Square, he frequently visited his Chester County farm. For the reason that on weekends he entertained many guests there.  He would meet friends in the Sullivan House’s front portico for fox-hunting expeditions. Later on he would retire with his guests to the rear terrace, overlooking the lovely countryside.  Sullivan eventually made the Chester County estate his permanent home. As a result, he made several improvements to the Sullivan House, including the placement of a wide staircase and fine antique furniture.

A bachelor and an active member of his church community, Sullivan was a founding member of the Malvern Retreat House. During the 1930s, Sullivan briefly served on the Board of Indian Commissioners. Furthermore, one of his nieces recalls meeting Native Americans on grounds that now include Hershey’s Mill.

After Sullivan’s death in 1958, Sullivan House fell into a considerable state of disrepair. Thankfully the house was rescued and renovated by the original developer of the Hershey’s Mill community. Sullivan House initially served as a meeting place and community center, until the current community center was completed. Now, Sullivan House is available for private functions. In addition, it is the site of a model railroad, featuring an extensive track layout, and carefully designed scenery.
